German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote that we have killed God in his popular piece entitled “The Madman”. Have we ever thought what will happen after we have buried the God who is the ultimate creator?
This entry is a reflection of Ravi Zacharias’ Message: “What Happened After God’s Funeral?”
There’s a true story about a man and a woman who were one of the brilliant, most beautiful couple ever to get married. The pastor who was marrying them thought they were the finest couple he was going to officiate.
Not long after, 7 or 8 months after in the wee hours of the morning, the pastor got a call from the young man. He was sobbing uncontrollably.
“Pastor will you please come?” He said through sobs.
“Why, what’s the matter?”
“Because I think I killed my wife.”
You Take Man to be God
When we kill and bury the one ultimate being who has declared and dictated morality, life, death, meaning, origin and purpose, we have no point to which to anchor ourselves to. Everything becomes relative.
And since God is dead, we have to take his place – even if it is to simply justify the deed of killing him. There will be no center to values. Absolutes will be demolished.
We will live as moral nomads – without origin, without purpose, without a solid definition of right and wrong.
This is how atheists fundamentally live today.
Ultimately, this philosophy will drive itself to a point where the end is either a drive for power or a drive for pleasure.
You have to Take your Body to be your Soul
If there is no God, there is no soulishness, if there is no soulishness all is left is the material, and if the material is all you have, you have to take the body to be the ultimate and the eternal.
We will be forced to make our body, in all the research science has revealed to us, to be the ultimate measure of our emotions and decisions.
You will never look at emotions the same way. Feelings such as happiness, sadness, and excitement are merely a result of secretions of juices in your body.
The saddest thing about this philosophy is that if you take the body to be the soul, feelings of nobility and shame will be eliminated. What need is there for nobility and shame if everything is simply a result of bodily secretions.
You have to Take Time to be an Eternity
Death will be the end of everything. Life becomes completely senseless. Time becomes eternity.
The death of a 5 year old child through a freak accident will be no more or less meaningful as an old man of 95 years dies of a natural death. It is what it is.
The Bible says otherwise.
“…Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.” – John 14:19
Playing God
The pastor came and went up to the man’s apartment and he saw the corpse of the wife there in the bed.
“What happened?”
The young man continued to tell the pastor the story. They got pregnant and the wife thought that they shouldn’t have. They were in the peak of their careers. The man as a medical practitioner and the wife as a professional.
She pressured him to let her get the abortion but he wouldn’t.
“If this is what’s happened, let us take it from God. I’d look like a fool fighting against abortion! I’d be going against my own words and principles in the eyes of the university!”
But she wouldn’t listen.
“Why don’t you do the abortion yourself then? So that nobody will know?” She said.
So he got all the equipment he thought he needed and proceeded to inject her with the anesthetic. He was a new medical practitioner.
As he injected the anesthetic into her system, he gave her an overdose and lost her.
And now he just stood there and repeated to himself:
“I killed her. I killed her. I killed her.”
It’s a very sad story. And we see the man trying to get out of a traumatic problem, making a fatal mistake and lost a wife and unborn child while trying to play God.
You see, this happens everyday. We try to bury God, you and I.
And when we do, we shift to a phase where we take ourselves to be God, our body to be our soul and our time to be eternity.
Don’t make the same mistake.
With God, you see Jesus as the revelation of God, our soul in need of His salvation and you see the hope beyond the grave.
