Friends with Benefits

Friends with BenefitsIt is a popular term, isn’t it? A nice, easy, hearer-friendly way of connoting something of a historical taboo – sex with an unespoused partner. Isn’t it something so ironic that when you say ‘friend’ it is supposed to be a person whom you get along with. Whom you respect, serve, love, protect and guide?

It is utterly disheartening as to how that term has been mangled, and maliciously defiled when it is used for that phrase. “Friends with benefits” – as if the relationship is mutually beneficial. When in truth, the opposite is in place. It is a mutual degrading of each other.

Evil has been described as a violation of purpose (Ravi Zacharias). Sex has been purposed to be inside marriage. Friends are purposed to be people who wants what is good and nurturing for you.

So is it not justified when I say that the term “Friends with benefits” is, to some extent, a phrase that connotes evil?

I believe so.

I want to point out two things in this blog entry. The first has been said. The other point I want to tell you is this:

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” – John 15:15

Have you ever heard the term “Jesus with benefits” ?

Well let me introduce it to you. It is when you put Jesus at your beck and call. It is when you pray to Him only when you are in need. It is when you put Jesus aside on the weekdays and call Him your friend, Lord and Savior during the weekends.

When you have accepted Jesus Christ in your life as your personal Lord and Savior, you have given your relationship with Him a new purpose. You have made Him Lord – meaning master, the one who calls the shots in your life. When you have made Him your savior, you have put yourself in a position of eternal gratitude to Him.

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” – Luke 6:46

Without obedience, Jesus cannot be considered your Lord. Making Jesus your Lord is a matter of the heart.

Ever fell in love?

Isn’t it that if you really love someone, wouldn’t you do the things they tell you to?

There has to be love. There has to be relationship. How Jesus calls us to Him is not how a master calls a servant. It is a request for you to open the door and accept Him into your house. It is a gentle invitation to eat and talk and share.

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” – Revelation 3:20

Christianity is having a relationship with Christ, not a friends with benefits approach to His Sovereignty.

Check your heart. How’s your friendship and Lordship with Jesus?
