You are a manager.

Don’t believe me?

Well, who tells you what time to get up in the morning? I’m sure your boss does not dictate that.
What time do you brush your teeth? Cook breakfast? Get out of the house?

Do you even have time frames for those things?

If you do, well, you’re responsible for managing that.

We – every one of us, are managers of our own lives.

I used to suck in management. Yes – even managing myself.

I failed 28 units in college because of being late and cutting classes. Need I say more?

I learned that the key to being a better, more efficient manager was by having principles – and sticking to them.

You see, people who have principles in life have an immediate ‘no’ and an immediate ‘yes’ when being faced with critical decisions.

For example: If I have a principle of putting my family first – then when my wife asks me to be present for her in an important event, it means I would be there. I wouldn’t even think about it. I’d just do it.

The flip side? Well, if I don’t have that principle then I would probably negotiate with her and waste time thinking about it and balancing other priorities. I may even end up arguing with her and waste even more time and energy.

Principles are important. If you don’t have principles, you will find that 75% of the time you spend in making a decision is spent in indecision.

That’s true in your personal life and that’s true in business.

A manger who has a better, wiser set of principles will beat a competitor who has a manager with less and worse principles – black and blue.
