A Vampire and the Moon

I waved at the moon and it smiled back
As I gave a toast to the heavens.
In the black of the night, she was my companion
And together, we were merry.

Then one night, I stare at the sky
To see that the moon is not there.
I waited and waited until merciful sleep
Whisked me away into my dreams.
There the moon did shine and so the stars in the sky
And together, we were merry.

The next night, I waited for my moon to rise;
This time she did appear. And with the stars in the sky,
We danced the night away
And together, we were merry.

One night, I saw an orb of radiant light,
So familiar and yet so distant.
A piece of cardboard spoke to me
Of that one star which is one lifetime away.
I asked the moon and silent, she remained
And together, we were merry.

My moon was just a memory,
a faint reflection of the past and nothing more
Than a lifeless stone in the coldness of space
And yet together, we were merry.

For it is all I have left of my beloved sun,
which burns me in her presence.
Nothing but a chunk of a heavenly lie
Engulfed by darkness in the night sky
And yet together, we were merry
