Happy HalloweenWhen people hear the word, “Halloween”, the first things that usually come to their mind are costumes and candies. But for me, Halloween is that day of the year where my “reserved” DVD’s come to life, and whisper to my other left ear telling me that “it’s time”- time to wipe off the dust that have been covering them for so long, and finally place them in my DVD player that my mom won from a raffle contest at Makro about 3 years ago.

But two days ago, while I was sprint-walking to a nearby comfort room at Alabang Town Center holding my bladder, I passed by a cinema schedule that caused me to stop and hold my bladder a little while longer. I noticed that there wasn’t a single movie that was even decent enough for puberty buddies to have a good scare this Halloween. I got a little pissed, but I couldn’t hold my bladder anymore, so I hurried to the comfort room and took a leak.

Later that day, I went home to check the latest movies at the U.S. The top two movies were both Class A Halloween movies. The first one was the surprise mega hit, Paranormal Activity. And the second was the 6th installment to the most successful horror franchise ever: SAW 6. I then paused and saw how much our country was missing out on great cinema.

So if you have plans with yo’ buddies to go out sometime this Halloween weekend and watch, I don’t know, uh, Jennifer’s Body (?), I have a proposition for you. Why not call yo’ friends, have a “Which house has the flattest, widest, Flat Screen TV?” Contest, and have a great time watching great fright flicks in the house of the friend with the flattest, widest Flat Screen TV? If you find my proposition worth trying out, then I would be more than happy to name a few great fright flicks.

First of all, I promised my fellow Ninja, Sean, that I won’t be recommending any “Gore Galores”, so Imma stick with films with minimal guts, but maximum fear and suspense. You might have heard of “The Strangers”, but what you probably haven’t heard of is the French film, “ILS” or “THEM”.

Them poster“The Strangers” and “THEM” have identical plots and both are based on true events. I have seen both films, and I can guarantee you that Them is far superior. I watched both of ‘em late at night by myself and had opposite reactions. After watching Them, I never went to bed again without checking the locks of our front door. After watching The Strangers, I felt like I just got kidnapped by macho girls, and forced me to wear Hannah Montana pajamas and participate in their slumber party.

Right now, I can’t think of anymore films that are not hard to find, with fear, but without gore. Please bear with me. But if you have the luxury of possessing Torrent in your PC, I recommend “Trick R’ Treat” and “The Orphanage”.

I may not have told you much, but I have told enough for you and yo’ friends to have a frightening good time this Halloween. But if you really think you’ve got what it takes to be a hardcore horror fan, I can suggest you watch something without breaking my promise of gore-free advices. Watch “Twilight” and all three ”High School Musical” all at the same night- Now that’s torture.
