“The more you become a leader, the more you lose the right to think about yourself.”

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made as the leader of my organization is to put people who does not embody this principle in leadership positions.

People who put the right to think about themselves first:
Think of themselves before the organization and the team
Is always about what they are ‘going to get out of it’
Spread vicious gossip and slander when they don’t get their way

Because of this, they bring down the morale of the entire team long-term.

They may be skilled workers and you may think of promoting them because of that. Don’t. Doing so spells out disaster for you and your team.

Instead, look for someone who goes the extra mile without you asking it. Who thinks in behalf of what the team and the company will gain out of every potential sacrificial move he is able to make. Who makes sure things are done and the company’s reputation is uplifted with excellence.

Promote that person instead.
