I was on the LRT one morning, on the way to work.
Just a regular commute. Nothing dramatic. Nothing “life-changing.”
And then I ran into someone I knew from my La Salle days.
Now, let me be honest with you: I wasn’t exactly a poster boy for academic excellence.
I failed 28 units in La Salle.
I was a terrible student—cut classes, almost got kicked out, the whole package. If La Salle had a “warning label” for students, I would’ve been on it.
So there I was… older, working, trying to build a life… and I bump into this guy.
His name’s Harry.
Today, Harry works with me. He’s my Chief Production Officer in Sigil.
But back then? He was just starting work too.
We did a bit of small talk during the ride, and he asked the simple question people ask when they’re catching up:
“What do you do?”
I told him, “I’m about to go to HP. I do SEO on the side.”
And he said something that didn’t sound like a big deal at the time:
“Oh, SEO. I know someone who needs that. Maybe I’ll refer you.”
I remember my response clearly.
I was basically like…
“Thanks, man… but I’m not a big shot. I’m just starting out. Freelancer lang. What are the chances they’ll hire me?”
You know that feeling?
When you appreciate the offer, but deep down, you don’t really believe anything will come from it.
But Harry remembered.
He actually followed through.
And that one follow-through changed the trajectory of my life.
One Simple Referral… One Big Breakthrough
Soon after, I got a call.
A meeting was set.
I went to their office, presented what I could do, and… they signed the deal.
That client was Uratex.
And Uratex became one of my first big-name clients in the history of SEO Hacker.
That was a breakthrough moment for me.
Not because I suddenly became a genius overnight.
But because God opened a door that I didn’t even know existed—through a person I didn’t expect to be “a major turning point” in my story.
The Lesson: You Don’t Always Know Who God Will Use
Here’s the point I want you to take from this:
Sometimes, you just don’t know.
You don’t know which random day will become a defining day.
You don’t know which casual conversation will become a turning point.
You don’t know which “small” person in your life is actually carrying a key to a door you’ve been praying for.
God sends people into our lives that don’t look like major players.
They don’t come with fireworks.
They don’t announce, “Hi, I’m here to help you level up!”
They just show up.
And sometimes, with one referral… one act of kindness… one decision to remember you… they change a lot of things in your life.
That’s why I’m always going to be thankful to the Lord.
And I’m thankful to Harry too—for choosing kindness, for following through, and for helping someone who didn’t yet “look successful.”
Now we work together, and it’s honestly amazing to see how God can weave stories like that over time.
What About You?
Maybe you’re in a season right now where you feel like you’re “just starting.”
Or you feel like you’re not yet credible enough.
Or you’re thinking, “Sino ba ako para bigyan ng opportunity?”
I’ve been there.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
God intervenes.
Sometimes loudly.
Sometimes quietly.
Sometimes through an LRT conversation.
And you might not know it yet…
…but God is intervening in your life as well.
A Practical Challenge (That Might Bless Someone Else Too)
Let me leave you with something practical:
- Be the Harry in someone else’s life.
Do the referral. Send the message. Make the introduction. Follow through. - And don’t despise small beginnings.
The freelancer version of you might be the “origin story” of something bigger than you expected.
Because you never know what God will do with one small act of faithfulness.
