A lot of people I know of today would describe themselves as busy. Busy, busy, busy. It’s such an endearing term to productivity. Nowadays when you proclaim that you are ‘busy’ it connotes importance. It connotes work. It connotes that you are doing something significant. The question is: Are you really?
This is the time and age when we need to stop and ask ourselves “Why are we doing this?”, “What are we busy for?” Too often we are busy doing something so small and we are kept up in a world that is ironically so insignificant that what we, as human beings, are purposed for.
The Short Story
Funny how the spelling of “business” is so close to being busy-ness. If you didn’t know, I’ve been running an internet marketing company named SEO Hacker. It’s a digital marketing firm which specializes on search engine optimization. Growing this business has eaten up huge chunks of my time. I’ve learned tons of things as an entrepreneur, specialist, blogger, digital marketer, public speaker, CEO, team player, teacher, and its first managing director along the way.
I won’t lie, the journey from the day I started SEO Hacker until today has been a fun, fruitful and eventful one. It also sheds light and meaning to me as to who we are now as a company. But somewhere along the way, it has slowly eaten up my identity, ministry, time, and vision.
Called to be a Visionary
I’ve always seen myself as a visionary. I’m a fan of Marvel comics – I’ve read tons and tons of it. There’s this character that I’m quite fond of – Tony Stark (A.K.A. Iron Man). He’s such a huge visionary in his character role that he practically envisions a future too far ahead, with too plenty a variable to end up being a possibility. But he still goes ahead and plans for it – and sooner in the huge storyline, it does happen and his planning and preparation due to his vision, saves the day.
Do you know that we are called to be visionaries? Did you know that your Lord and Master is the most vision-filled man that has ever walked the Earth?
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.” – Isaiah 65:17
Talk about vision!
The thing is, we are so filled with our own short-term visions that we fail to see the big picture. We are blinded by giving in to being busy.
Break the Chains
How do you get out of your busy-ness? Simple. Refresh your vision. Align it with the big picture. How? I’ll let you in on the secret.
Ready?
Here it is:
Read God’s Word to know His vision.
Pray to align yourself with it.
Is it difficult? Yes.
Is it worth it? You bet.
Too Little : Too Much
This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible about materialism and poverty:
“Two things I ask of you, LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.” – Proverbs 30:7-9
I’m not going to add to nor subtract from God’s Word but I want to go ahead and edit it a bit for the busy-bodies out there who are B.U.S.Y.:
“Two things I ask of you, LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither idleness nor busy-ness, but remind me of your vision. Otherwise, I may have too much time and lean towards sin and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may fall under Satan’s yoke, and so forget the vision of my God.”
Remember the Lord’s vision and commission for us:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:19-20
Break the chains. Take up the vision.
Life is too short to forget what you were made for.
